Instrument Help
« on: April 21, 2010, 02:12:38 PM »
i've been looking at picking up a cheap guitar in an attempt at learning how to play.
but i have no idea where to even begin.

Not sure on a price range quite yet but something on the cheaper end would be best as i am just starting out.

Also opened to suggestions on where i could find something used by chance to.
If anyone has one they wouldn't mind parting with....or some suggestions on where to start looking it would be appreciated.
I can't explain. You would not understand, this is not how I am

if ya do buy a guitar always check the straightness of the neck, like you would a 2x4 and then hold down the strings (provided it has some on it with your index finger (across all the strings) which is a barre) and strum from the first fret down to 21st/22nd/24th depending how long the neck is some are shorter too like 18 frets would be classical.

A fret is the metal bar that seperates the fretboard/neck.

Anyways, do that an listen for any string buzzing... if u do hear some... and its not just (an out of tune note) its actually clak-clak-washboard style buzz... then i'd suggest not buying it... if u do buy it anyways, its usually 75$ to have a setup done where the neck buzz will get corrected and guitar intonated up.

But just pointing that out to ya b/c it would save ya 75$ as all u'd need is a new set of strings... or just use the deadened ones it has on it till they break or sound very poor.

Anyways good luck, i know Mud has a bunch of guitars u could ask to buy one off him.

I don't really have a bunch.

I just have 2 electric and an acoustic.

and a bass. none of which I'd recommend to anyone or part with.

Well I'd sell the acoustic, but it's small and shitty.

Why bother with guitar?  You could throw a bottle in any bar and get five guitarists wet.  There aren't any bands that need guitarists, because they already have at least two or three, not counting the bass player / keyboard player / vocalist / drummer, who can usually play guitar as well.

Fifty years of guitar rock have ensured that every combination of notes you could imagine have been played thousands of times before you were even born.  The instrument's played out, man.  Go for something fresh like chapman stick or banjo or something.

There is a kind of rough shape lookin BC Rich WARLOCK at cash converters for $150

I'd buy that if I were you. Though it might be garbage now, I wouldn't know.

But I want to buy it, I just can't justify it.

I don't know why I like those things, seem kinda gimmicky or something

I just liked playing with one through a metalzone. I'm a trendy ignorant fag.

If you're buying new, I've heard they're the best for entry-level and budget guitars.

As for finding a guitar with a straight neck, it's not hard to adjust the truss rod yourself, unless the thing is just warped.

But I agree with Tjernobyl. Pick a non-guitar instrument.
