Developers MIGHT BE buying it and turning it into lots of condos, depending on the reaction of community members 100ft or or closer to the land.

FYP.

Look at this council's record.  Increasingly anti-development citizenry, increasingly pro-development council.  I expect the developer's plan to be amended, maybe the density reduced somewhat, but I don't expect the residents to be able to stop it entirely.

I've been toying with the idea of starting a group called Thunder Bay- 2010 Forever.  The idea is that on January 1st, 2010, we cease all development.  No new buildings allowed until all the old ones are occupied or burnt down for insurance.  No new wind plant; if we curtail industry and reduce our population, we can get by on hydroelectric.  No changes to the waterfront, the contractors drop their spades and leave it exactly as it is.  If you walk out to the end of the Wilson Street headlands and look at the skyline, it looks exactly as it could have thirty years ago, except for the goverment building.  So, I say we paint it brown and get it looking as shitty as everything else.  We keep everything comfortable and old fashioned, we can let our town die a natural death, the way we remember it.

On another note, I went to my ward meeting last night.  It was incredible.  Other than the city councillor and secretary, I was the youngest person there.  By half.  There were 3 people who may have been in their 50s, but otherwise, all ancient.  One of them gurgled as they got up and it was the wettest thing I had ever heard.  Our generation can't be arsed to go out and vote, and they get polling stations brought right to their buildings.  These are the people that are voting, and they're the ones setting the direction for this town.

A lot of the night went something like this:
Councillor: So, how do you think the off-leash dog parks have been working?  Are there any properties in our ward that you think would work well as an off-leash park?
Old lady: I just want to say that I think there should have been a referendum on the waaaaaaterfront...
Councillor: Moving on, I followed up on the complaint about the bus stop across the street and am pleased to say that the path has been built up, and the water won't ice up there anymore.  Has it worked out well for all you?
Old man: I would like to that you for that.  It feels much safer.  However, I would also like to recommend that a traffic light be put up down the street to slow traffic so that we can cross the street safely.
Old lady: How come there hasn't been a referendum on those windmills?

If I had remembered that a good chunk of the waterfront was in my ward, I wouldn't have gone.  People are gonna be bitching about it for decades.

interesting,
wettest thing you ever heard , haha
I've never been to a ward meeting, but this sounds about right.
it is lame how the elderly are the ones trying to guide the direction of our fair city, but how can i complain when i dont go to them.

PUKE UP ALL KINDS OF WINE:

* We book a private room at the best restaurant in town.  We sample 7 or 8 wines, with appropriate courses to complement each.  There will be a main course of something so delicious it blows our wine-addled minds.  If we can get 8 people putting in something like $90 each, we can pull it off.
